Como Friends takes conservation seriously—even in our gift shop. In Fact,….

Garden Safari Gifts remodels and recycles to make more room for the gifts you love.

In fact, during Garden Safari Gifts’ recent remodeling effort this winter, the nonprofit fundraising group decided to resell several redundant fixtures rather than risk them ending up in a landfill.

“We also repainted a few of our existing fixtures to give them a fresh new look, rather than buying new ones,” says Assistant Gift Shop Manager Sheila Wewers. “All the proceeds that come from this gift shop help support Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, so we try to be mindful about supporting the conservation mission behind Como through the gifts we stock and even the way we remodeled.”

Did You Know?

  • Garden Safari Gifts is owned and operated by Como Friends, the nonprofit fundraising partner of Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.
  • Last year, Como visitors totaled up 94,068 transactions at Garden Safari Gifts, all to benefit Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.
  • When Garden Safari Gifts made the switch from incandescent to LED bulbs several years ago, the change reduced the shop’s carbon footprint by 45,562 pounds of CO2 every year.

Garden Safari Gifts’ new look was unveiled in late February, and it’s already a hit with customers who like the improved traffic flow, apparel displays, and clever “storytelling” niches that connect gift items with Como’s own animal and plant collections. “Customers keep telling us it feels so much bigger, but we didn’t add any square footage,” says Manager Terri Scheunemann. “Instead, we’re making better use of the space we have, and highlighting some of the ‘only at Como’ gift items that are really popular.”

The gift shop’s famously diverse collection of animal plush is always popular, particularly for Easter basket gifts.
