Your Contributions to Como Friends Seed Change at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory

From the fantastic new Como Harbor habitat now under construction, to the fresh new milkweed garden ready to take root, contributions from people like you seed changes large and small at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.

Here’s a look at some of the high-priority programs and improvements your support for Como Friends will make possible in 2019:

A Splashy Aquatics Building Renovation: With Como Harbor now underway, the Aquatic Animals Building is about to get a major remodel that marine animals and Minnesota families will love. The renovation effort will start from the ground up, with new sea colored flooring and engaging new marine habitats that will make visitors feel as though they’re immersed in an underwater world. Como’s popular penguins and puffins will be joined by brand new neighbors, including a giant Pacific octopus, sea horses, garden eels and new micro-marine habitats that include a coral reef, a Hawaiian reef, and even a mangrove forest.

Rainforest Refresh: The lush rainforest canopy of Tropical Encounters will get a carefully executed update this spring, as Como’s horticulturists rejuvenate the temperate tropical habitat with a large-scale replanting, replacing and pruning project. Como Friends funding will help to provide several new tropical trees ready to take root, and a specially-sized pruning lift that will help horticulturists navigate tight spaces and narrow paths. Other garden projects are also underway,  including a new Milkweed Pollinator Garden near the Primate Building, and restoration of the landscape and new tree planting in Buzz and Neil’s lair in Polar Bear Odyssey.

Conservation Champions: Once again, Como Friends is funding Conservation Champions, a high-impact micro-grant program that empowers zoo keepers, horticulturists, education specialists and other Como staff members to take part in conservation projects here on campus and with partner organizations in the field around the world. From tracking snow leopards in Krygyzstan to releasing orphaned orangutans back into the wild, these unforgettable field experiences help inform Como’s conservation message, while allowing Como staff to share their expertise with species preservation projects around the world.

Campus Improvements: Como Friends funding helps to provide the extra resources Como needs to elevate its mission, while making Como more accessible and sustainable. Your support gives Como the extra care and funding it needs to thrive. Thank you!
